A Northwest Beginning — and a Partnership That Endured

In 1990, the firm Jerry Willey (along with Dan Mueller) built had merged with Jones & Roth. Jerry immediately appreciated the firm’s progressive mindset. The environment was collaborative, enjoyable, and energizing and Jerry felt at home.

A Unique Path Fueled by Curiosity, Courage, and Growth

Robin Matthews joined the firm in 1990. Throughout her journey, Robin appreciated that Jones & Roth is a firm big enough to offer resources and opportunities, yet small enough to collaborate, adapt, and bring the partner group along with new initiatives.

Builder of Expertise, and Mentor of Leaders

Jim joined Jones & Roth on February 1, 1991, jumping straight into busy season. His construction-industry background aligned perfectly with the work Partner Mike Lewis was building. Mike saw in Jim not only technical skill, but the kind of steady, collaborative leadership that strengthens teams and supports long-term client relationships.

1980s

The firm had become known as Jones, Griesel, Noah, & Lewis. In 1981, they were approached by David Roth and Dick Rice to discuss a potential merger with their firm, and they merged in 1982. They agreed on a name: a simple combination of the two firms’ managing partners Lanny Jones and David Roth:

and we have been known by that name ever since.

The first computer arrived at our office…

…an IBM about the size of a large, portable sewing machine. “We would complete all the information on these worksheets, then we handed them off to be input into the computer and it would generate a diagnostic sheet,” said retired partner, Phil Stice. “So you ended up with this nice package with the client information at the bottom of the file, the input sheets, and the diagnostic report.”

Someone would check the math using a non-photo blue pencil, which the photocopier couldn’t pick up. Receptionist Diane Knoedler then would type the first two pages three times. “So there were typed pages and photocopies of handwritten pages,” Stice recalls.

“I really think that the personal computer is the future of our industry.”

A Three‑Chapter Career of Service, Leadership, and Quiet Mastery

In 1985, Dave merged his own practice into Jones & Roth, stepping into a larger firm environment that challenged and energized him. Even with two decades of experience, he often said he still had a great deal to learn.

The Beginning of Women in Leadership

The firm has welcomed numerous women into leadership positions over the years, but the first woman to become a partner was Jill Foster. Born the same year that the company was founded, Foster first started at the firm working as a bookkeeper in 1974. When Foster retired in 2000, she had paved the way for many women to follow in her footsteps.

In 1974, Doug joined Haggerty, Ruff & Company, stepping into a small, close‑knit firm that was poised for transformation. He quickly became an integral part of its evolution.

Trusted Advisor, Teacher at Heart, and Humble Champion for Small Business

In 1976, Jeff joined Roth & Rice, the small two-partner firm led by his father-in-law, Dave Roth. The office was tiny — two partners, three receptionists, two bookkeepers, one staff accountant — and full of people who communicated by simply yelling down the hallway.

Where Jones & Roth Began…

The story of Jones & Roth began back in 1946, when Bill Haggerty and Archie Ruff worked as accountants for the Edward Hines Lumber Company in southeastern Oregon.

Just southwest of Burns, the town of Hines was originally known as Herrick, so named for Fred Herrick, who founded a lumber company and railroad there. When Edward Hines bought the railroad and lumber company from Herrick in 1928, he established a post office there and renamed the town after himself. Bill Haggerty moved over to the Willamette Valley and started an accounting practice in 1946, and six months later Archie Ruff joined him to form Haggerty Ruff & Co., the firm that would one day become Jones & Roth.
